“Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.” Malcolm S. Forbes KIWANIS EDUCATION PROJECT So many things have been said about education, so many issues covered, so many studies made, so many books written and libraries of knowledge generated; so many subsequent studies and programmes elaborated, so many efforts made and human lives lost in the past in order to have a decent education for everybody, a prosperous ground for a more harmonic and civilized society built on human values, built on knowledge and experience acquired throughout the history of human being. A lot has been done for a brighter future of our children, the generations to come. But, there are several nagging questions needing appropriate attention: is it enough, is it everywhere, is it sufficient, could we do something more? Regrettably, although we have the perception that we live in the most prosperous time in the human history, even at present we still have local, regional and international problems whereby their core problems are based upon improper education, lack of education, or even no education… problems based on wrong interpretation of all the issues that education covers… So many ignorant people with just a little or no education pride themselves of being the creators of local and/or international politics, the “rulers” of our everyday life, wellbeing… What is it like, we witness everyday!!! What sort of negative impact it has on us, on our lives, society and predominantly on our children-our future, would need writing a whole book to describe. In the past 10 to 15 years many changes took place in a wider region of Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia affecting the whole Europe and wider, the World; some of them experiencing it in a prosperous and evolutional way, others in a rather degrading manner. However, for most of them, one is in common: instead of keeping and upgrading the already established educational levels, the changes in the system, both political and economic, had bad effects on the social and particularly the educational levels. The “popular” transition from one into another system generated a totally different picture in many of those countries. An array of bad and problematic individuals with totally impropriate (or no) education, fooled and encouraged by their mental ignorance and incompetence, took their chance in those turmoil days to promote their vision of democracy, multi-parliamentary and promises (lies) of social welfare and people’s well-being. Well, we are witnessing that the political “trick” worked and many of them got elected gaining power and having the devices and tools needed to make appropriate changes. But, what happened!? Instead of focusing their power into general evolution, what happened was the creation of a new “class” (“elite”); a group of individuals with such a greed for power, political and financial status, becoming blind from their personal gains, they totally forgot the ordinary people, the children, the system changes they promised. And naturally, what was supposed to be our driving seat into the contemporary and expanding scientific no-limits world, the education suffered the most. Accordingly, our children were denied acquiring, not better, but basic knowledge! The political greed transited into darkness. Macedonia is no exception from this short analysis. The cradle of Cyrillic alphabet, ancient culture and wisdom, the cradle of similar languages spoken across a large portion of the earth, with millions of people educated, became a victim of such transition and the political greed. Not only that the educational system suffered with no, or little evolution and progress, but the whole infrastructure, schools, buildings, dormitories, sports courts and halls, educational tools and equipment, books, libraries, scientific cabinets, IT rooms etc. suffered extensively. Thereby, our children. Monies that were supposed to be invested in education modernization and horizon widening were improperly used. Most of the monies, in addition to the personal gains already explained, were used to create and settle wars, conflicts, ethnic unrests; local and international monies, donations and know-how support irreversibly and uselessly wasted. Result: our children suffer. So, what is to be done? The proposed Kiwanis Education Project could do a lot, could solve many problems, could initiate the spark so waited by those in need and those who are in position to help, assist, offer their support. I have no illusion that it is going to be an easy process and that we could solve all the problems, but, at least I believe that with an appropriate study and approach, creating a flexible model, we will be in a position by giving personal examples to make adequate improvements and motivate other to join us in this noble struggle. And all of that, for the benefit of our children – our bright future! In Skopje, on the 20th day of July 2002 Ognen Stamatoski, MSc. MPM & TQM |
